In 2023, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting was held in San Francisco, United States, under the theme "Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All." The meeting provided strategic guidance for economic, trade, and industrial cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.

As an important participant in the power electronics industry, Shinhom Magnetics leveraged the APEC platform to showcase its high-power-density magnetic integration solutions for AI servers and new energy vehicles to customers worldwide. Driven by the dual growth engines of artificial intelligence and new energy technologies, high-power-density magnetic integration is entering a period of broad adoption.

AI and New Energy as Dual Growth Drivers: Expanding Applications for High-Power-Density Magnetic Integration

The rapid development of AI data centers and electric vehicles is accelerating the evolution of power electronics toward higher power levels, higher switching frequencies, and more compact designs.

In 2023, the emergence of ChatGPT triggered a global surge in large-scale AI model deployment, leading to significant growth in AI server shipments worldwide. The Greater China region accounted for more than 30% of the global market, placing increasingly stringent requirements on power supplies in terms of dynamic response, thermal management, and reliability.

At the same time, 800V high-voltage architectures for new energy vehicles entered mass production in China, with penetration rates steadily increasing. Under these conditions, magnetic components are required to deliver higher efficiency and superior thermal performance within increasingly constrained installation spaces.

A common challenge faced by the industry is how to increase power density while minimizing system losses within a limited volume. Magnetic integration technology, characterized by its high-frequency capability and compact form factor, has emerged as a key solution to this challenge.

Flat Wire Inductors and Planar Transformers: Shinhom's Flagship Products Featured at APEC

To address the practical requirements of AI and new energy applications, Shinhom highlighted two flagship products at APEC 2023: flat wire inductors and planar transformers. These mature solutions directly address industry demands for high-frequency operation, low power loss, and high integration density.

1. Flat Wire Inductors: Designed for the High-Current and Thermal Demands of AI Servers

AI servers frequently experience large transient current fluctuations during operation. Compared with conventional round-wire inductors, traditional designs suffer from higher copper losses and less effective heat dissipation under high-frequency conditions.

Shinhom's flat wire inductors utilize rectangular copper conductors. Compared with conventional round-wire designs, the increased conductor surface area-typically by 40% to 60%-effectively reduces high-frequency copper losses. Furthermore, the winding structure allows for tighter stacking, creating more efficient thermal conduction paths and more uniform heat distribution, thereby reducing the risk of localized hot spots.

The product series currently covers power ratings ranging from several tens of watts to several kilowatts and is widely used in AI server power supplies, GPU power modules, and 48V-to-12V power conversion systems for data centers.

2. Planar Transformers: Magnetic Integration Solutions Aligned with the High-Frequency Trend of GaN and SiC Technologies

As devices such as GaN and SiC become increasingly widespread, the limitations of traditional wound transformers-including larger size, higher leakage inductance, and poorer electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance-have become more pronounced.

Shinhom's planar transformers employ a PCB multilayer winding structure combined with planar magnetic cores. This design enables a smaller footprint, lower leakage inductance, and improved EMI control, while achieving overall system efficiencies of up to 98–99%.

The transformers can also be co-packaged with power semiconductor devices, reducing parasitic parameters and simplifying overall system design. These products have already been deployed in volume production across applications including onboard chargers (OBCs), onboard DC-DC converters, AI server power supplies, and industrial power systems.

Leveraging APEC Opportunities to Strengthen Global Supply Chains and Serve International Customers

The 2023 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting was held in Detroit, United States. The Chair's Statement issued following the meeting emphasized enhancing the resilience of regional industrial and supply chains while promoting digital economic development and green, low-carbon growth.

These initiatives create a favorable environment for the global expansion and collaborative development of electronic component manufacturers.

Shinhom currently operates four major manufacturing bases in Xi'an, Weinan, Jinan, and Shenzhen, China, and has established a fully integrated supply chain spanning soft magnetic powder materials, magnetic core production, and component assembly.

The flat wire inductors and planar transformers showcased at this year's APEC event represent mature product solutions developed in response to industry trends toward higher frequencies and greater miniaturization. They also demonstrate the company's practical commitment to regional cooperation within the Asia-Pacific economy.

Looking ahead, Shinhom will continue to focus on innovation in magnetic components and collaborate closely with partners throughout the value chain to provide stable and reliable component solutions that support the ongoing advancement of global power electronics systems.
