A balun transformer (balanced-to-unbalanced transformer or impedance matching transformer) is a device used to convert signals between balanced and unbalanced circuits. It is commonly applied in telecommunications, audio/video equipment, RF circuits, and antenna systems.
The main function of a balun transformer is to match the impedance of source and load circuits while converting signal formats. This helps reduce signal loss, minimize common-mode noise, and improve overall signal integrity.
A typical balun consists of a magnetic core (such as ferrite) with multiple windings. The number and arrangement of windings depend on the application. For example, a 1:1 balun has one winding on each side, while a 1:4 balun has one primary winding and four secondary windings.
During operation, the balanced signal is applied to one side, and the other side provides an unbalanced signal (or vice versa). This conversion occurs through electromagnetic coupling between the windings and the core, ensuring proper signal transfer and impedance matching.
